Birds
Birds can easily be recognized. While they are not the only
species that can fly and not all birds can fly, they all have
feathers, two legs, wings instead of arms, and they all lay eggs.
Birds are warm blooded and extremely intelligent animals that man
has marveled at for centuries. Birds can be found in every
ecosystem around the world, ranging in size from the tiny
hummingbird to the impressive ostrich.
Birds are social animals, communicating not only within their
species, but with other birds with a complex series of “songs” and
participate in many social activities like cooperative breeding and
hunting. Most birds mate for life with both male and female
partners participating in the raising of the young.
Many species of birds are of major economic importance to man,
though mostly as food sources, such as turkeys, chickens, and
guinea. Several species of birds have been domesticated and are
highly valued as companion animals. Bird droppings are also used in
the production of fertilizers.
Many theories pertaining to the origin of birds have been
published, with one thought being that they are a highly
specialized type of dinosaur as scientists have uncovered many
fossils that closely resemble modern birds. Some scientists
discount this theory, believing that birds descended from species
that pre-dated the dinosaurs.
Birds are highly adapted to they main food source. Birds’ diets are
as diverse as birds are themselves.
